The 2050 Energy Infrastructure Outlook project provides data on the costs associated with key types of fixed energy infrastructure as well as identifying possible ‘grey areas’ where technology development could significantly influence cost and performance. The project gathered data on different types of infrastructure associated with electricity, gas, hydrogen and heat. It also looked at infrastructure types: transmission, distribution, storage, conversion and connections. The data itself looked at costs relating to capital, fixed/variable operating and maintenance, abandonment (‘infrastructure decommissioning’) and repurposing (‘altering existing infrastructure’).
This presentation outlines the infrastructure cost calculator tool which was developed by Buro Happold as part of this project - how it works, its data sources, what it can be used for, and its limitations.

This includes identifying the skills required of the people on the ground as well as the optimum material distribution networks to supply them with exactly what is required and when.

The primary objective of this 2015/16/17 Project was to provide an understanding of UK produced biomass properties, how these vary and what causes this variability. This slide set was presented by the Forest Research led team, covering the findings from the whole of the Characterisation of Feedstocks Project. This project provides a wealth of robust information and many consistent high-level findings to inform biomass growers and end-users. The findings have challenged some widely held views, reinforced others and hinted at some intriguing differences that may be worth further study.
It was not possible to derive simple guidance for biomass growers because of the differences in the behaviour of the individual feedstock characteristics. For any one year and site, the net effect of these changes is difficult to predict.

- HDVs represent an opportunity to cost effectively decarbonise the UK energy system across a range of abatement and cost levels
- In the first instance, the ETI’s efficiency projects have shown that a 30% reduction in fuel efficiency across the UK fleet can be achieved with reasonable payback periods
- Properly sourced and managed natural gas when coupled to a low methane slip powertrain can provide further CO2(equivalent) benefits
- As the UK transitions to a very low CO2 energy system (circa 2040 to 2050), further ‘carbon priced’ HDV options could become attractive
- The marginal carbon price will be a function ofthe other technologies deployed in the energy system (e.g. CCS versus no CCS), but thresholds can be set using the ETI’s ESME tool
- Barriers exist in the uptake of fuel efficiency technologies and new tools, techniques and policies are required to overcome them –a subject for future work

- The UK has massive CO2 storage potential; it also has tremendous gas infrastructure (assets and people) to support CCS
- The storage sites closely relate to existing gas industry and power generation locations
- Gas power plant is cheap and quick to build compared to its competition; CCS (on gas) is competitive
- Mid 2020’s sees a need for significant new generation –the market should value reliable, despatchable power
- Gas companies may be sufficiently motivated to develop new long term customers that they may take new risks –storage, capture and transport are all existing gas company competencies
- Gas CCGT with CCS provides both capacity and green electrons – it avoids having to subsidise an OSW plant for green electrons and an OCGT for reserve
- High OSW penetration could be increasingly costly –having CCS as an option will be valuable

This Final Summary Presentation slideset summarises the findings of the Energy Technologies Institute’s project studying the capture and storage of carbon dioxide using mineralisation, CCSM. Five major groups of CCSM technologies were defined and the so-called “aqueous multi-step with additives” group was selected for investigation. Ammonium compounds were utilized as additives, and the CCSM process studied in this project is referred as an “Ammonium-based” CCSM. The Natural Hazards Review project will develop a framework and best practice approach to characterise natural hazards and seek to improve methodologies where current approaches are inefficient. This is to improve energy system infrastructure design and the project is intended to share knowledge of natural hazards across sectors. The project will be completed in three stages. Phase one will focus on a gap analysis. Phase two will look at developing a series of improved methodologies from the gaps identified in phase one, and phase three will demonstrate how to apply these methodologies. The Natural Hazards Review project will develop a framework and best practice approach to characterise natural hazards and seek to improve methodologies where current approaches are inefficient. This is to improve energy system infrastructure design and the project is intended to share knowledge of natural hazards across sectors. The project will be completed in three stages. Phase one will focus on a gap analysis. Phase two will look at developing a series of improved methodologies from the gaps identified in phase one, and phase three will demonstrate how to apply these methodologies. The aim of the Power Plant Siting Study project was to explore the different opportunities and constraints involved in developing sites in England and Wales for new low carbon power plants. The study considers new nuclear as well as fossil fueled power stations using carbon capture and storage technologies. The study is important to understand the different features which could either make a potential site suitable or, alternatively, prevent its viability. This study is intended to inform whether there is likely to be competition for development sites between low carbon technologies, which could be a future constraint in the low carbon replacement of the UK’s ageing power plants. Phase two of the ETI Tidal Energy Converter (TEC) project will see two Atlantis owned 1.5MW commercial tidal energy turbines installed on an innovative foundation structure designed and built as part of the project. This will take place at the MeyGen site in Scotland and increase the number of turbines at the site from four to six, increasing the rated capacity of the tidal array from 6MW to 9MW (enough to power 4,500 local homes). Atlantis are developing a patent-pending innovative and cost effective multi-turbine foundation design as a result of the work they undertook in the first phase of the project - a total system lifecycle cost of energy methodology to identify tidal energy system technologies capable of significantly reducing the cost of energy being deployed at array scale.

ETI runs a Heavy Duty Vehicle (HDV) Programmeto develop and demonstrate de-carbonization technologies in on-highway and off-highway vehicles as well as marine vessels. The Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) project was one project within the HDV programme portfolio
- Targeted a 3-4% fuel efficiency benefit and hence green house gas benefit from this project whilst exceeding emissions standards
- SCR fitted to every truck and large off-highway machine sold in the EU and many newer cars
- ETI requested a SCR system capable of achieving a 98% reduction in NOx whilst not exceeding the space requirement and delivering a superior cost to own to the end use
- SCR technology must be applicable across a range of vehicle types and usage cycles
- Light usage vehicles and machines are the most challenging
- Lots of developmental solutions –little science based engineering.
- Achieved project objectives(3-4% GHG benefit at acceptable cost and package size) – applicable to any diesel engine!
- And many side benefits...

Reducing the ‘top head mass’ (i.e. nacelle, rotor, gearbox, generator and ancillaries) of a wind turbine is one of the key requirements for current and futuredesigns. It enables a lighter and more cost effective tower and foundation, and reducing gearbox weight and size has a huge benefit.
