The Energy Technologies Institute invested in Isentropic, an innovative UK SME set up to develop and demonstrate a cost-effective energy storage device that uses heated gravel as the energy storage medium as opposed to the more common but expensive battery based technologies.
This report summarises the main conclusions and outcomes of the project including the finding that it has potential for delivering innovative energy storage solutions. However, technical capability alone is insufficient to deliver innovative products to a commercial market which is still emerging. The current regulatory environment is failing to incentivise technologies that are not needed in the current energy system but have been clearly identified as crucial components of a future system.
Isentropic was one of many start-ups with a product with the technical potential to meet UK distributed storage needs but, like many others, they did not succeed in turning their innovative solution into a commercial product before the company ran out of funds – even with support from the ETI. They were faced with the major challenge of raising commercial funding for a research and development based proposition where market prospects for early returns were unclear. Developing other market opportunities may seem like an obvious approach to mitigate this risk but in itself brings the need to raise still more capital.
Following Isentropic’s administration, the ETI has invested further to ensure this promising technology is not lost. A new collaboration with a UK university is allowing the storage system development to complete but without the pressures of raising immediate commercial funding.
This report summarises the main conclusions and outcomes of the project including the finding that it has potential for delivering innovative energy storage solutions. One of the three main types of saline aquifer store relevant to UK CO2 storage capacity that this project identified were “open aquifers”. In order to obtain more reliable storage capacityestimates for open aquifers, dynamic modelling was performed by numerical simulation using two classes of model: simplified generic models, termed “Representative Structures”, and more detailed models of selected regions of actual UKCS aquifer units, termed “Exemplars”. The Forties sandstone of the Seles Formation off North East Scotland was modelled in detail as an exemplar of a large open aquifer.
Overall, this work has presented a quantitative framework for assessing storage si tes based on different constraints – pressure, migration distance and migration speed and placed different cases into three storage regimes. This work has shown that open aquifers of modest permeability and dip can prove to be favourable storage sites with large storage capacities. These aquifers limit the speed with which the CO2 migrates while the extensive open pore volume can help dissipate pressure, avoiding pressure problems associated with other types of storage site.

The project did not seek to collect structural data on saline traps, but some data were available for dome structures in the Bunter form ation of the southern basin. As a result this storage type is the least numerous in the CarbonStore database, nonetheless its storage capacity is of particular interest, as such stores could combine the advantages of both open aquifers and pressure cells through structural containment with potentially less pressure restriction.
The storage capacity of the Bunter domes has been estimated previously on a volumetric basis, assuming a pore volume utilisation of 40%. The dynamic modelling work undertaken in this project improved these estimates byinvestigating pore volume utilisat ion and pressure interference between domes in a multi-injection scenario. The Bunter Formation was sub-divided into areal Zones and each of these Zones is classed as separate, but open, storage Units in CarbonStore. Zone 4 was selected for detailed study here as it contains the majority of the Bunter domes and so makes a significant contribution to the volumetric storage capacity in the Bunter domes.
The dynamic work on structural traps involved material balance Representative Structure modelling of CO2 injection into all the Zone 4 domes described in this report and fine scale Exemplar modelling of injection into up to three selected neighbouring domes. Three versions of the Representative Structure model were constructed based on the minimum, most likely and maximum properties in CarbonStore. Most simulations assumed injectioninto all domes simultaneously. Injection was constrained by fracture pressure limits for each dome and the parent aquifer itself, set by data from CarbonStore. A rough optimisation of injection well numbers was performed as usually a point of diminishing added value was reached for additional wells.
Injection into a single dome to estimate the time required to fill the dome to the maximum assumed pore volume utilisation gave long filling times in excess of 100 years for large domes, despite using many wells. Injection into all domes simultaneously indicated significantpressure interference. Both these findings substantially reduced achievable storage capacities on likely project timescales, suggesting that these domes have achievable capacities substantially less than the maximum capacity indicated by the buoyant capacity limit

Some important findings arose from this study:-

- No faulting was visible on the seismic over the closure
- The storage capacity was estimated to be large enough to store a sizable amount of CO2
- The area included three additional closures that could be used to study the impact of CO2 injection on adjacent storage units
- Data coverage was good over the chosen area
Some important findings arose from this study:-
- The storage capacity may be controlled by either the pressure (when the pressure increases above the maximum limit, the rate must be reduced), or the migration rate (if a high injection rate is maintained, CO2 will reach the spill point more rapidly).
- The pore volume utilisation and total capacity are quite sensitive to the assumed value for the fracture pressure gradient. A change in this gradient may switch the storage control from pressure-controlled to rate-controlled.
- The storage capacity for an open model may be less than that for a closed system, if heterogeneity encourages a low pore volume utilisation.
- It is import to monitor the pressure at the crest of a dome. Even when the injection rate is pressure controlled at the depth of the well completions, the pressure may rise above a safe limit in the crest.
- It may be possible to increase storage capacity by controlling the injection rate. A lower rate will allow CO2 more time to rise buoyantly and to dissolve in brine, before reaching the spill point.

As injected CO2 is assumed to be fully confined, the pressure behaviour, rather than CO2 transport, is the main issue of interest. This report is concerned with dynamical modelling of such pressure cells, using numerical simulation of simplified generic models, ‘Representative Structures’, to check whether storage capacity estimates derived from an analytic solution were acceptable for the purposes of the project.

The work was focused on the modelling of large open aquifers (LOAs) and carried out in two parts. The first part looked at representative structures (generic models) of low injectivity LOAs and the second part on the specific Exemplar 1 (Forties) aquifer. One of the objectives of the geomechanical modelling work was to see if there was any scope for changing the maximum injection pressures from those based on fracture pressure gradient to some other geomechanical criterion. A supplementary (non-geomechanical) study looked at the sensitivity of total CO2 injected to the magnitudeof the fracture pressure gradient assumed. The general conclusion from the work was that maximum injection pressures based on fracture pressure gradient were conservative and should generally be used for storage assessment in the project.

The method adopted to evaluate risk is based on a ‘Features, Events and Processes’ approach similar to the methods used or recommended in other geological storage site evaluation projects. Containment risk refers to leakage from the storage Unit, while operational risk is concerned with the likelihood that injection operations will be disrupted due to subsurface conditions. Likelihood and confidence data were collected and interpreted for each storage Unit.
The highest frequency containment risk items in terms of impact on storage capacity include all faults, lateral migration and wells, and the risk of seal degradation. The latter reflects geological variability in seal quality across laterally extensive storage Units, while the former, partly the result of the conservative approach to fault risk assessment also shows that faults are a key feature at the majority of storage sites and consequently deserve immediate attention in site appraisal. Cost impact assessment using the same likelihood data leads to an elevation of lateral migration risks, with structural, depositional and dip magnitude controls the most important i.e. most frequent high risk items. Identification of the most common high risk items across the UKCS helps provide direction for future study to characterise the impact of the most important risk items.

The objective of the CCS UK Storage Appraisal Project was to provide a fully auditable and defensible overall estimate of UK CO2 storage capacity in offshore geological formations. Emitters committing to major capital investment as major CCS roll out occurs in the 2020s will require confidence in the availability of sufficient, suitable storage sites to accept the emissions over the project lifetime. Total UK capacity requirement is expected to be ~15 Gt (including industrial sources) to store 100 years of emissions. The project started in September 2009, and the project team (led by Senergy Alternative Energy) has populated almost 600 potential storage units in the North Sea, Western Channel and Eastern Irish Sea with geological data, security of storage and economic assessments. These units cover both depleted oil and gas reservoirs and saline aquifers. Comprehensive and consistent methodologies have been developed and peer reviewed within the team for calculating storage capacity for each unit. These take into account both ‘static’ effects (e.g. how much CO2 can be stored before a maximum pressure is reached) and ‘dynamic effects’ (e.g. how much CO2 can be injected into a large open aquifer before there is a risk of migration beyond the bounds of the storage unit; how fast can CO2 be injected into a ‘closed’ unit through one well).

The objective of the CCS UK Storage Appraisal Project (UKSAP) has been to provide a fully auditable and defensible overall estimate of UK CO2 storage capacity in offshore geological formations, to inform future roll out of CCS in the UK.
The key project findings are that the UK has more than sufficient storage capacity to meet its ambitions for CCS over the next 100 years. This will require use of both depleted oil and gas reservoirs and saline aquifers. To meet the rapid roll out expected in the 2020s, appraisal of aquifers needs to start in the near future.

The modelling capability will provide a whole systems view of the different services that could be provided and at which points in the energy system they are most appropriate. Management consultancy Baringa Partners are delivering this new project to develop the capability to improve understanding with regards the future role of energy storage and the provision of cross-vector system flexibility within the context of the overall UK energy system.
This report defines the modelling approach to analysing the longer term role for storage and other relevant flexibility options in Great Britain from a system operator perspective. The primary objective of the Storage Flexibility Project is to develop the capability to improve understanding of the future role of energy storage and the provision of system flexibility within the context of the overall energy system (i.e. across multiple energy vectors, points in the energy system and in provision of multiple system services, from peak shaving to frequency response or gas pressure regulation). A modelling approach for analysing the longer term role for storage and other relevant flexibility options in GB to 2050 (making use of existing ETI tools such as ESME where appropriate) has been developed during Stage 1 of the project for this report. The approach has considered findings from an extensive literature review as well as insights from two parallel Stage 1 project deliverables, a storage and flexibility requirement mapping exercise, and an assessment of nearer term energy storage potential. The development of the approach has carefully considered theimplications of a number key sources of complexity that arise as part of this type of modelling.

The aims of the work undertaken were:
- To characterise the main areas of heat use in the UK and the magnitude of the primaryenergy used
- To describe the main characteristics of the different technologies and approaches available for thermal energy storage and provide examples of their availability, deployment and demonstration
- To review current thermal energy storage system research to determine key characteristics, costs, maturity and additional research requirements
- To identify key application areas for thermal energy storage in the UK based on a national target for an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050
- When combined with large scale deployment of electric air source heat pumps, to explore the potential for peak grid load balancing and the magnitude of thermal energy storage that could be achieved on a distributedbasis
