Description:
This project, funded with up to £2.5m from the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC - now the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy), was led by Aberdeen-based consultancy Pale Blue Dot Energy supported by Axis Well Technology and Costain. The project appraised five selected CO2 storage sites towards readiness for Final Investment Decisions. The sites were selected from a short-list of 20 (drawn from a long-list of 579 potential sites), representing the tip of a very large strategic national CO2 storage resource potential (estimated as 78,000 million tonnes). The sites were selected based on their potential to mobilise commercial-scale carbon, capture and storage projects for the UK. Outline development plans and budgets were prepared, confirming no major technical hurdles to storing industrial scale CO2 offshore in theUK with sites able to service both mainland Europe and the UK. The project built on data from CO2stored - the UK's CO2 storage atlas - a database which was created from the ETI's UK Storage Appraisal Project. This is now publically available and being further developed by The Crown Estate and the British Geological Survey. Information on CO2Stored is available atwww.co2stored.com.
