About the project

  • Project to practically test and develop novel approaches to domesticretrofit
  • House types to be retrofitted based on the findings of previousETIresearch
  • Project strengthensETIs growing capability in creating future-proof and economic local energy solutions across theUK
Abstract The aim of the project is to validate the cost, time and energy effectiveness of domestic retrofit across different house types, using an approach that could be employed to improve the energy efficiency of the vast majority of the existing 26 million homes in the UK which will still be in existence by 2050. The novel, mass-scale retrofit approach being tested was first developed in a deskbased ETI project (Optimising Thermal Efficiency of Existing Housing) completed in 2012, as part of the ETI Buildings programme. The novel, mass-scale retrofit approach tested was first developed in a deskbased ETI project Optimising Thermal Efficiency of Existing Housing completed in 2012, as part of the ETI Buildings programme.

The 541k project retrofitted five types of domestic property.

  1. A pre-1919 mid-terracehouse.
  2. A pre-1919 detachedhouse.
  3. A 1919-44 semi-detachedhouse.
  4. A 1945-64 semi-detachedhouse
  5. A post 1980 semi-detachedhouse.
