Objectives
Abstract All-electric and hybrid electric vehicles are set to play a prominent role in addressing the energy and environmental impact of an increasing road transport population by utilising a more energy efficient and less polluting drive-train alternative to conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. The heart of this project, and the most important innovative element, is the electrical integration of a small, hydrogen fuelled, Proton Exchange Membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) with a maximum power output of 6kW integrated via an electronic converter, with a high power, high temperature Zebra battery of 40kW, providing a complete power source for the traction and passenger heating/cooling of a small / medium sized vehicle. The project application is aimed at a zero emission black-cab taxi for use in inner London. The PEMFC/Zebra power source combination develops an average power of 6kW for typical city and suburban journeys plus transient peak powers of 46kW to provide a good level ofacceleration and regenerative braking, especially in all-electric drive. The combination of the two power sources within the vehicle poses significant academic challenges, viz. (i) the design optimisation of the power electronic conversion stage between the PEMFC and Zebra battery, and the optimisation of the energy management systems for both (ii) the individual power (PEMFC and Zebra) sources and (iii) the overall integrated vehicle system
