Objectives - review current knowledge on cultivation of giant grasses drawing on UK work and also EU work and elsewhere as appropriate. - utilising agricultural knowledge, evaluate giant grass enterprise in comparison with other farming enterprises in a number of areas across the UK - determine factors necessary for development of giant grass cultivation as a viable agricultural enterprise. - determine thecompetitive position of giant grasses.
Abstract This desk based study will review the knowledge available within the UK and beyond on giant grasses, Spartina spp, Reed Canary Grass (Phalaris arundinacea), Switch grass, (Arundo donax) and other lesser known biomass producing grasses with potential using Miscanthus as the benchmark for comparison. The study will assess the potential of the giant grasses in an economic and agronomic context within representative UK agro-climatic areas and provide a ranking order oftheir potential. It is intended that this review will identify the giant grass front-runners and provide MAFF with guidance on the scale of research required and likely timescale of achieving agronomic and economic comparability with Miscanthus spp.
