Objectives | The project aims were to- Identify the sustainability impacts (environmental and social) across the lifecycle of clothing based on existing evidence; Assess the robustness, uncertainties and Identify gaps in the impacts evidence; Make recommendations on further research required on lifecycle impacts of clothing; Review and assess the effectiveness of existing interventions to improve the sustainability performance of clothing and make recommendations on where UK interventions could make a significant improvement. *** Note: There is a comprehensive set of reports available, although only the Technical summary report has been uploaded
Abstract | To support the Sustainable Clothing Roadmap (http://archive.defra.gov.uk/environment/business/products/roadmaps/clothing/documents/clothing-map-intro.pdf), this project is a desk top study of existing evidence to determine the sustainability impacts that occur across the life cycle and supply chain of clothing, existing interventions, gaps in evidence and recommendations for improving sustainability performance of clothing. The life cycle stages include raw materials (growth, acquisition and processing), fibre production (natural and synthetic), clothing production, garment assembly, packaging, distribution/retail, use and end of life were considered. There is a significant volume of evidence (UK and international) on the environmental and social impacts of clothing which has been drawn on for this project.
