Abstract | Throughout the world there is an increasing recognition that electrical power supply systems are about to enter a period of radical change. Both the PIU Energy Review and RCEP report "Energy the changing climate" make recommendations that would have profound consequences for the UK electric power system. However, UK power companies and manufacturers are facing continually increasing competitive pressures with very limited resources available to undertake long term research. There is also a serious shortage of young highly trained electrical power engineers in the UK. The Electrical Energy and Power Systems Group at UMIST presently has a critical mass of researchers and academic staff working on various aspects of Distributed Generation and Sustainable Electric Power Systems. The overall objectives of the Platform Grant are to capitalise on this activity and to co-ordinate existing research better and to improve communication with UK industry. early deliverables will contribute to the 2010 targets for Renewbales and CHP. In addition the project will develop, and start to address, a more radical research agenda so that the UK power industry can respond to the challenges of major de-carbonisation. This work will, of course, recognise the existing investment in infrastructure and include consideration of migration paths to new solutions | |
