Abstract | Rechargeable lithium batteries are a major Worldwide technology with production reaching 109cells in 2001; overwhelmingly these cells have been used in consumer electronic products. Rechargeable lithium batteries are now at a watershed. In order to develop new generations of rechargeable lithium batteries capable of use for energy storage in the clean energy economy, for hybrid electric vehicles or even for new power hungry electronic devices, it is essential to establish new approaches to thedesign of electrodes, especially positive electrodes and to electrolytes, especially polymer electrolytes. Realising this goal demands a long-term approach in order to synthesise new classes of materials, explore their properties and ultimately optimise their performance. Such an approach is not well suited to the normal 2-3 year research grant. The Platform Grant will enable us to retain excellent postdocs with core skills while such individuals are between 2-3 year research grants. This isessential if we are to compete internationally with the very best groups and within the context of a long term strategic approach to our research. It will also permit us to develop new ideas to a point where they can form the basis of support through the normal 2-3 year research grant proposal | |
