Abstract The need for alternative sources of energy to fossil fuels (oil and coal) is now widely accepted. Probably, no single alternative will emerge. Instead, a variety of new approaches are likely to be employed and the increasing use of biofuels is certain. However, even biofuels usually require nitrogen fertilizers and non-biological fixation of nitrogen is expensive on an industrial scale. This project examines whether a proportion of both the carbon and nitrogen in the biofuels can be returned to the soil as fertilizer and recycled through the plant-soil-microbe system.
